Part of the Club in Hungary!
Hungary played host to national Fresh Eyes winner, Mark Molnar and his artist mentor, Agnes Szepfalvi. Both enjoyed a weekend in the exclusive ING Renault F1 Team Paddock Club and took time to visit the team’s pit garage and inspect the cars up close.

Heart of the action
The lucky winner of the UK Fresh Eyes competition was Nick Archer, from Hastings, Sussex, who joined ING at the British Grand Prix at Silverstone last weekend. Nick creates large format works, often studying movement and those he submitted all impressed the judges, including his race mentor, Sir Peter Blake. Here are both artists at the heart of the action, inside the ING Renault F1 Team pit garage – Nick (foreground) opted to record his experiences with digital photographs; Sir Peter (first left) chose his sketchbook.

Focused effort
Fresh Eyes has involved professional artists with a range of styles. Jason Brooks, famed for his portraiture, is creating individual works of the ING Renault F1 Team drivers, Fernando Alonso and Nelson Piquet Jnr, and team manager, Flavio Briatore. The first step in creating each image is a large format reference photograph, taken using a plate camera. Here, double Formula 1 world champion, Fernando Alonso sits for his photograph in the team’s pit garage, while Jason makes final adjustments to the camera.

Water can’t dilute Russian spirits
Despite unseasonably cool and wet weather, the Monaco Grand Prix could not dampen the enthusiasm of the Fresh Eyes Rest of the World winner, Alexey Chaykasov, from Moscow!
Alexey was chosen from hundreds of entries, from as far afield as the USA and China, in a special competition open to all those who did not have a national competition to enter.
His place was earned by a striking visual style and rounded technical ability that appealed to all the judges. The resulting days spent in the Monaco Grand Prix pitlane meant plenty of opportunity to seek inspiration, by taking his own photos and spending time with mentor Jason Brooks.
“One more time, thank you for such great weekend, for your help, support and attention! I am full of emotions and impressions and ready to start work at the sketches right away,” said Alexey on his return.

Drawing on Spanish passions
The first European Fresh Eyes competition was held in Spain, with mentor Marta Marce.
The winner was chosen as 24-year old graffiti artist, Hector Darcos, whose interpretations of Formula 1 evoked the style of classic poster art of the early 20th Century.
Hector and Marta saw an extra dimension to Formula 1, in being at the centre of attention focused on the sport’s Spanish hero, Fernando Alonso.
“The atmosphere was amazing, so exciting”, said Marta.
“This has just been the best experience; I have so many photos and notes to work from”, said Hector.
Both are working on their pieces right now.

An Australian adventure
The first 2008 Fresh Eyes experience was won by Sydney-based artist Julie Burke, who travelled to Melbourne with Paul Thomas RWA, where ING took them both behind the scenes with the ING Renault Formula 1 Team.
Some of Julie’s previous works had an automotive theme, but she had never experienced Formula 1 up close and was fascinated by the artistry of the aerodynamic wings carried on each race car.
The weekend spent with her mentor, learning about Formula 1, really fired Julie’s imagination: “I had such a great weekend and being back in Sydney, I am really looking forward to getting stuck into the work. It was an incredible experience.”
We look forward to seeing the results!
